J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. Also, just finished reviewing some items I checked out this weekend including a few Holiday items: the Jewel Neck Top, a pair of black/white print crazy pants, the Peacoat Popover, the Cocoon Coat, the Swiss Dot Blouse, and the pink Slim Trench in this post.

    7. Hey everyone, thanks for letting me know about the pictures. I tried viewing my blog on several different browsers and realized that some pictures weren't showing up in Internet Explorer because I was custom adjusting the sizes of the pictures. I went in and fixed the problem and I'm able to see the pictures in Internet Explorer now. Firefox and Chrome seem to be displaying them fine. Are they displaying now, through the browser you're using? Let me know if you still have problems seeing the pics and what browser you're using. Thanks a lot!!

  2. I can't remember who but someone mentioned in an earlier post about how versatile the Boy Shirt in Snow cat is and I'd just like to reiterate that. It went from being just a lowly add-on in my quest for free shipping to becoming a wardrobe staple. I wear mine with jeans and leather jackets on the weekend and under sweaters and blazers during the week. It adds an immediate touch of fun to any outfit and every time I wear it someone wants to know where I picked it up. Both my mum and sis have ended up getting one along with my hairdresser and manicurist. You're welcome J. Crew, lol.

    1. Side note: the snowcat boy shirt is on sale and I snagged it for $18 last night.

      My B&M did a store-price match + extra 25% off sale + student discount + waived shipping.

Anybody interested should snag one! I'm really excited to get mine.

    2. ITA with this. I wasn't particularly excited about this shirt initially, but picked it up on a whim with an extra percent off of sale after seeing it on Slastena. I absolutely love it, and have worn it several times even though I've only had it about a week and a half. If you're on the fence, grab this one!

    3. @Lisa: What is the store price? It's $34.99 online. TIA!

    4. In store price is $29.99 I think? My b&m always does an in store inventory search and checks what the price is that way!

  10. Bad news about the velvet toothpicks: after wearing only twice the velvet is rubbing off, right down to the fabric. I'm really disappointed that I paid so much for a pair of pants I can only wear twice. Also, the inside seams fray off the velvet and when you take the pants off you'll have a nice pile of velvet shavings to clean up. Ugh.

  14. I have never purchased a Blythe blouse (even on super sale) because I hate those cheap white buttons...is it my mistake or does the factory option have nice fabric covered ones(in the matching color of blouse) I almost bought the bright sun blouse but those white buttons made it look cheap...anyone feel the same. I guess I could change the buttons...but come on J crew...your are really cheap with the buttons. Carolyn From Vancouver

    ReplyDelete

    1. Carolyn, the factory ones do indeed have covered buttons. They are much nicer looking than those chintzy white plastic ones!

    2. I actually got the Bright Sun Blythe even though I detested those cheapie buttons because I couldn't help it. Bright yellow has my fav color since I could remember. I did immediatley change out those grubby buttons for pretty mother of pearl looking ones like those on the featherweight cashmere short sleeve ruffle cardigan circa Spring 09. The shirt now looks spectacular IMHO. I have so many shirts and sweaters that I changed the buttons on (and not only J. Crew) that it now seems completely normal to me. I do it myself (thank you all girls Cathoilc school), so besides the pretty new buttons, there is very little extra cost on my part. I think I got addicted to doing that when I realized how new, beautiful buttons makes even the most basic shirt and sweater look more special.

  17. Hi all! Recently found this blog but never posted. I have a question on the sizing of the snowcat boy shirt. My perfect shirt size is a 2, except for the black watch which I took a 4 in. The only boy shirt I own is the red/navy heartthrob shirt from last spring in a 0. I also take a 0 in the Blythe. Would you advise ordering a 0 or a 2? Thanks so much. I've found this blog very helpful (though my wallet hasn't)!

    1. I would go with the 0 - I always wear 1 size down in Blythe/boy shirts from my perfect shirt size.

  19. Couldn't reply to the snow cat/boy shirt post, but I want to plug it for the larger/curvier sizes. It's counter intuitive, but as a 34DD hourglass the boy shirt fits me and the perfect shirt does not. The fabric is nice and substantial yet has a little give. I took a 10 in the boy shirt. For comparison my Blythe is a 12P. I'm short waisted but the boy shirt hits my waist in the right place. The best thing about it for a bigger bust is how the sleeves are set in (straight) compared to the perfect shirt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with this, too. I'm busty and short-waisted, and the boy shirt fits me much better than the perfect shirt.

      Delete
    2. Yes to all of this - the Boy Shirt is great for bustier figures.

      Delete
    3. Generation Kvetch - Thanks for your comments on the boy shirt v. perfect shirt. I am a 34D hourglass and am wondering - does the boy shirt have an oversized or slim fit? I prefer a slim fit, but sometimes run into the gaping front with the perfect shirts. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this from you and other busty JCAs. Thanks!

  21. I wore my new Sheer Mint Hacking Jacket in double-serge wool to the mall the other day for a couple hours and came home to find the underarms, sleeves, and sides terribly pilled. Also, the interior chest pocket seaming is so thick (or the wool is so thin) that the shape of it shows through and sticks out on the outside of the jacket. The SA in JCrew even noticed it.
It's a gorgeous blazer but it's too expensive to look like a rag after one wear. My double-serge hacking jackets from last year are still perfect. I wonder if I got a bad one or if the double-serge wool has changed and this is how they all are. I think I'm going to have to return it. Anyone else wear this blazer yet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Debby: This is interesting because I had to return my blazer because it was too big in my normal J. Crew jacket size. My amazing online VPS thinks that the blazer I received was marked wrong. The new blazer arrives tomorrow. I'll definitely reply back here once I've worn it.

    2. I just received my DS Hacking in mint, and I am so disappointed in the quality! It's definitely not as thick and plush as last years version, I just compared the two. I could see the lack of quality the minute I took it out of the bag, it just felt so thin and stiff. Love the color but not paying $$$$ for color alone, the quality has to be there. So upset that they cheapened out such a classic piece. I have the Herringbone Hacking in dusty jade, that appears to be the same as last years quality, I've worn it with no issues and it feels as thick as last years version. Sadness....

      Delete
    3. Oh no. No, no, no. I was going to order that one with my rewards. I love (loved) it. I have last year's version in the camel, 'red' and black colorways and have been majorly crushing on the mint. This is truely a sad day. Why J. Crew? Why?

I haven't worn my mint hacking jacket out but I was wondering - it feels so much thinner than last year's hacking jackets. I'm bummed to hear that my worries about it were confirmed. I've tried it on several times - then tried on my double serge hacking from last year to make sure I wasn't imaginig the quality difference. But the material really does seem flimsy. :( Too bad - it is a beautiful color.

JCAs - What are your thoughts on Madewell? I am new to the brand (just made my first purchase - the lovely Camden satchel in burgundy; LOVE!) and am wondering about quality and such of the clothing, shoes, and accessories. The SA at my B&M described it as "J. Crew's more hip younger sister." I would appreciate any comments you have on the brand as a whole. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love their jeans, scarves and shoes. I've tried their denim shirts but they didn't have the wash I wanted, I know that it is also a particular popular item for the brand. In terms of sizing, I think they don't do the vanity sizing the way JCrew does and fairly consistent sizing with their dresses. HTH.

      Delete
    2. patmosjd: I've been really pleased with all of my Madewell purchases so far, and have found the quality of the items that I've received to be excellent.

If you're thinking of trying more of the brand, now is a good time since the shipping and returns are free.

      Delete
    3. I've also been quite happy with Madewell. I've only bought tees & sweaters so far (still going strong after 2 years of regular wear), but they hold up much better than the JC tees (vintage cotton BOO!) & sweaters (pilly cashmere and merino!) I have.

      Delete
    4. Thank you Joelle, FFM, and smarain! Interesting how Madewell doesn't have the same quality issues that J. Crew has on its items. Isn't Madewell an offshoot of J. Crew, or am I misunderstanding the connection?

      Delete
    5. I just bought a Madewell t-shirt w/a pocket in a pretty red shade. Feels more substantial than the vintage cotton JC tees and seems like it will hold up much better. However, even on sale, it was pricey for a t-shirt. Will definitely have to hunt for these on sale w/discount. But I wore it today and it was great. I think it will hold up much better tan the JC tees of late.

      Delete
    6. Jruby, I don't know if you have a B&M Madewell near you, but (as with JC) the sales are much better than online. I've gotten my tees on sale for $10 - $15, and I *think* they often have 2 for $35 or something like that deals. Also, they have been running an add'l % off sale stuff several times when I've visited.

  29. Just got my November Style Guide...like most things J Crew this year, I'm on board with the accessories/shoes...and not much else. What is up with Easter Egg colors for winter?! Lilac and buttercup yellow everywhere, baby pink as well. Thought process may have been "no one else is doing it..."; there is a reason J Crew! Spring will come in it's due time. Few highlights, gorgeous nudish pink Edie grand bag, two tone oxblood fuchsia little Edie, the Fair Isle turtleneck in greens is gorgeous to me, but not $650 gorgeous...J Crew is trying to grow up in the fashion world a little too fast. Lest they forget, when high dollar fashionistas wear J Crew they say, "It's J Crew, can you believe it?!" NOT "It's J Crew (dramatic pause)". This is a brand in transition, and they're doing it rather poorly at the moment. The green ribbon cord toothpicks are sweet and unique, but your bum must be in summer condition or you may end up looking like one of those lumpy plastic Christmas sacks your parents used when they were too lazy to wrap your toys...odd bits poking out in all directions. A print on a toothpick is NOT forgiving! The vivid jade, more foresty if you ask me, pencil in serge is beautiful...but I am a pencil skirt fiend who cannot be stopped; I could be totally biased and wrong on that skirt. I don't know about any of you, but I find tweed hard to pull off without looking like I'm going for granny chic...yet, the lady jacket in corkscrew pinks is quite the stunner. I could always buy it for my gran this X-Mas and admire it from afar. The hothouse dress is gorgeous, and if it has the right weight to it, could be a nice score for J Crew in their ever quickening race to the top of the fashion ladder. One note, I wish they would add more interest pieces to their special items such as the hot house dress. I'm sure it has a plain back. I'd like to see a nude mesh center panel with invisible zipper detail to spice it up, nothing low cut, just something else to look at other than the print. I'd love to see some full skirts from them, the Green Tinsel fabric on their no. 2 pencil would do well on a full skirt. Page 32, why does J Crew pretend the chiffon dot top is not see through...better yet, why did they MAKE IT so see through(shakes fist at sky)??? Moving on to the collection pencil skirt in brushed wool, in chartreuse, with a thigh high slit...I like; however, only chartreuse? J Crew, I realize you are striving to be chic, but give us a color option, and pairing it with a brown lady print sweater??...the model is laughing for a reason. Although, I would totally buy that sweater in ivory or red...again only one color option, and that color is an unfortunate shade of dried mud they beneficently call caramel (eyes roll out of head). I'm not going to lie, I will buy the polka dot sequin top in both colors (champagne and black), completely versatile and festive. The flame floral jacquard skirt in "dried papaya" (cue second eye roll, they roll farther away)...what to say...it's a digital print, an affordable alternative to the pointelle that is making the rounds at D&G right now...but I can't help to think that with a mix of cotton/nylon/silk, the only silk to be found may be in the washing instruction tag...I wouldn't put it past you J Crew! The moral of the November Style Guide story is this: For winter, J Crew wants you to douse your self in pastel, wear fair isle at every turn, and always, ALWAYS part your hair down the center!

  30. I tried on the new rollout toothpick ankle jean in black and white geometric print today at my B&m. I had such high hopes because I looove the print but they did my thighs and legs no favors. I wear a xs/s, 4 in the cafe capri and I tried a 28 in these. They fit fine in waist and bum, but I didn't like the tight fit in legs. They don't have the thickness of a denim or fabric weight but are very close fitting and snug through bum, thighs and calves. I much prefer the look of my snowcat Bennett chino in a size 6 on me. Maybe if I wore these toothpicks like leggings with a oversize sweater to hide the fat. Overal very disappointed but I guess I didn't need 2 black/white pants anyway! Walked out with nothing after sp wouldn't match online price for dot tippi so I will continue to stalk.

  31. Has anyone tried the (Collection) cashmere ribbed sweater? Is the quality good? Is the neckline annoying? Is the Heather Cabernet really a cabernet shade? (I found the "Heather Burgundy" shade to be too red, not a deep cabernet like what I'm looking for.)

  32. Need help! Is the heather flax lighter than last year's heather acorn in the cashmere? I had the tippi in heather acorn but it was too browny-beige for me. The web site photo of the flax makes it look like a softer, creamier beige colour, but am I being tricked?

  42. Is it me or is the sizing of the Tippi sweaters inconsistent this season? Picked up the gray, black, and burgundy in a Medium this weekend. The gray and black were fine, but the burgundy was so much larger on me than the other two. Ugh.

I finally decided to pick up the wool café capri in retro jade after the price hit just under $40 with extra 25% off this weekend. I had to size up to a 6 (usually a 4 in café capri). Not too itchy…wish they were lined…but what is new. The factory version is nice since they are lined, but I just love this retro jade color…thus why these went home with me.

I’m going to try to stay out of the store for a while since nothing is catching my eye. I’m still on a good high from receiving my icon trench in wool-cashmere in cabernet last week and I don’t want my high to end..ha.

  44. Has anyone here machine washed their Twill Minnie Pants on the delicate cycle and machine dried them? Do they bleed? Do they shrink? Do they come out fine?

Mine are just ever so slightly too big, even though I sized down, but I don't want to completely ruin them. Since I just got my first pair (got 'em in v.f. red), I'm hesitant to experiment so much and need your sage advice. TIA for all helpful replies.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have with my navy ones. They didn't bleed and the texture came out the same as before (I used cold water/low heat). I think they shrank a little bit, which was my goal.

The bi-stretch wool minnies are a different story. Their texture changed in the dryer, and they shrank a size.

      Delete
    2. Thanks, Cate O. I feel much better now knowing someone else has done this already and the pants came out fine. Now that the size of your twill pair is right, do you air dry them to avoid more shrinkage? Or was the total shrinkage just the little bit?

I'll be sure to avoid putting any wool pairs in the wash. Such a shame! Hope they weren't completely ruined for you.

  45. Ladies, does anyone have any fit and/or review info on the Collection Pony hair skirt from last year? I find myself really taken with the uniqueness of this piece. I know it could only be worn once or twice per season, but think it would make a really nice special addition to my closet.

Thanks for any help you can give :-)

  46. Received my black pixie pants recently, and I love them! They look great with a long sweater, JC boots, and the downtown field jacket. They're a great, thick weight, too (not as sheer as leggings). My only issue with them is that the tag says "dry clean only," which is not practical--and is also very bad for human and environmental health. Does anyone know if these actually could be washed on delicate and hung to dry? Anyone tried it? Thanks!

  47. Leah, I have repeatedly machine washed (and sometimes dried in the dryer) my pixie pants (some of which are a few years old) and they still look new. Go for it!

  48. Has anyone tried the Tweed stripe short, item 13869? I'm curious as to how it feels & fits. Since I'm in CA I think wool shorts & tights can actually work during the fall/winter without freezing to death. Thoughts?

  49. Thanks so much, J. Crew JD! I really hate using dry cleaners, ever since I read a NYT article about how the chemicals were showing up in women's breastmilk. The health and environmental impacts seem worrying. However, I am too selfish to give up my love for JC clothes, and everything I buy seems to have a "dry clean" or "dry clean only" tag. I appreciate your advice--and Gigi's timely blog post about whether to launder dry-clean-only items. I really am going to try to wash as much as I can. I'm also thinking about buying a steamer.
