"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I wonder if the next promo online will be like the store promo? I hope so.

  2. I got my September catalog in the mail yesterday, which was actually two, one for men and another for women. It was slightly better than a sales flyer which was disappointing as this to me is such a part of what made J Crew stand out from the rest of the pack. Like I would rather fish an old September catalog out of my pile to re-visit than look at this one. I don't understand how they can't see how the little investments in the core aspects of a business can pay off, just like paying attention to the descriptions of the clothes you sell. The cut corners are obvious in every aspect including all the editing mistakes like for the 1988, or 1986, or maybe the 1984 Rugby Shirt.

    1. Same here. And why didn't they include item names for many of their offerings? "Shirt (X1234)" doesn't mean anything to me. Tell me it's a long-sleeved perfect shirt in stretch cotton, available in colors x,y,and z, and I might realize it's something I'd like.

    2. The catalog is a huge disappointment. It's more like a magazine editorial layout than a catalog I would actually order clothes from. No real description, no selection of other colors/prints, nothing. If they're cutting back on catalogs, at least make the ones you DO produce worthwhile. It makes me so sad.

    3. I haven't gotten mine yet, but that's a disappointment. I love flipping through it even if I'm not going to buy anything.

    4. Well I'm in Canada so apparently I won't see one ;)

    5. You truly aren't missing a thing. Like Cobalt mentioned above, the description says "shirt" and gives style number and nothing else. Useless.

    6. I didn't even notice the lack of info-probably because nothing caught my eye enough to check 😔. This is the first catalog they've mailed me in over a year-and it went straight to recycling (I'd already picked one up in store). I wonder if they've widened distribution in the US since it's done less frequently and isn't being sent to Canada...

  3. I too got the September style guides yesterday and I agree completely, TeriLynn13. That may be the saddest move ever by J Crew.

    1. Ditto. I got mine yesterday. What a waste of money to produce and mail. The company is clearly cutting corners in every direction possible. Not a good sign.

  4. I really like the daisy bell sleeve top in today's new arrivals. It looks somewhat cropped which would work well over a maxi dress and my baby bump. I think I am going to try this one.

    1. It's really cute! Way more boho than my usual style, I wish it was photographer better so the shape was more obvious. I'm also not sure if the cami is attached or loose. I think it would look cute over a button down shirt too.

  5. I hope my store has the The 2003 washed silk V-neck tank for the 30% off the entire store promo. I love the washed silk camis I have. They're super thin, so not for everyone, but they've held up so much better than other silk items from Crew and they are perfect for travel.

I just hope my store doesn't give me shit about combining promos. It's the last day to use the additional 20% off.

    1. I wasn't able to combine the 20% off with the 30% at my store.

    2. The always push back since it says it's compatible on the card. It's just a hassle.

      Delete
    3. And of course, I forgot to go. Maybe it's a sign.

      Delete
    4. It clearly states on the card that it can be combined with one other promotion so it makes zero sense that the stores will not honor it.

    5. @JessF I called customer service and they helped me out and placed the order with the 30% plus the additional 20%. So much better than trying to politely argue with the store manager.

  6. Saw a coat I like this morning. It's called "Product Short Desc - Please update at the product level". Come on, J. Crew. I'm a stickler for details and this kind of sloppiness makes me nuts. Anyway, it's a long version of the canvas field jacket. It looks cute....but it seems they did it last year and if I remember correctly I tried it and it was huge in the body of the coat.

  7. not a vent: free shipping today, and the Pierre Frey tunic showed up in the sale section for the first time (i think) and it's not FS. I picked up two sizes just to try it out. Would love to own something in that print, it's so pretty.

  8. That "style guide" is the saddest thing. It went right in the garbage. Website isn't working for me today. Haven't ordered anything in months.

Donating what I would have potentially spent on new arrivals if I could have seen them to the Red Cross or other worthy relief organization.

  9. I don't get it. I never received an email for 30% off in stores. I am a cardholder and spend several hundred dollars a month there. What gives???

    1. Me too. And my store never fails to act rudely with me...

    2. I am a cardholder and have had issues for a couple of years not getting promos. In my local store I told the SA and she honored the 30% off plus my birthday gift card, she looked up my account and saw that I am signed up for e-mails and do purchase through the year. I told her I read this blog and that is how I find out about these promos. If they don't honor the discount I won't make the purchase.

  10. I posted the review for the bee jacquard pants on the website. I'm still voicing my disappointment. There is no give in the fabric and they are slim fit, but they won't do up. Baggy everywhere else but I can't get them to do up. I'm tempted to see if there's an issue with the ones I received (this happened to me twice last year with sizes mis-labeled). With this issue with fit and the tennis racket t-shirt issues, I'm about done.

    1. That's unfortunate since I like the pants but haven't tried it.

    2. I'm really disappointed as these pants were the one item I really wanted. I'm going to head to a store and try again and see

    3. I tried them on in a store a month ago, and agree the fabric has little to no give. I took a few sizes in to try, and found that my usual JC bottom size fit in the hips and JUST FIT in the waist, but were loose in the lower leg. The fabric is substantial though - thick and holds its shape, and I think pretty warm.

  11. I went into the store planning on buying multiple colors of the washed V silk tank, but it desperately needs bust darts. Another beautiful basic ruined by cutting back on design details and workmanship.

    1. Hmmm interesting. For my personal style, I don't think I care either way. I like a loose drapey fit. We'll see when I try it on.

    2. Granted I am very busty but it just hung awkwardly down from my chest away from my figure. That coupled with the side vents also made it seem short and like my stomach would be exposed. I tried it in 3 sizes (0, 2, 4) and all were unflattering. Maybe girls who are "less-endowed" won't find it a problem, but for me the lack of darts was a deal-breaker.

    3. I am only a 32D, so I guess it doesn't effect me. Like I said, I like drapey, so I like the hang. Personal taste. I really only like darting in button down dress shirts.

  12. I picked up a ship to store today. It really struck me that the customer service in my store has really tanked. Granted, my purchase was small (two popback tissue turtlenecks) and these pickups must be a nuisance, but the regular SAs were downright rude. I was ignored at the counter, looking stupid standing there for 5 minutes before one of them wandered over, and i was greeted with some major attitude.

Maybe it's not so fun to work there these days w the poor business results and complaints, but don't make matters worse by treating me like sh*# when I come to the store. Online CS is so much better.

    1. So sorry-that's unacceptable. I'm lucky to have a very friendly SA who greets me by name and asks if I'm there for a pickup 😆. One trip a young guy was there and commented that I sure get a lot of packages-but it was said more with wonder than annoyance-ha!

  13. Can you really call it the 2007 Italian stadium-cloth wool toggle coat if it is so different from the original coat? It's missing the cute collar, seaming across the waist, patch pockets and wooden toggles. I'd bet anything that it doesn't have the cute 100% silk plaid interior lining. IMO, those were the details that made it classic JC. You're not "bringing it back" if you're completely changing the design.

    1. I thought the same thing! There are several items that seem to be throwbacks with this little rollout but I do think is unfair to refer to them as same as the original as we all they will not be the same due to cost costing measures and fabric quality!!!

  14. The browse/search function has been updated from the choices at the top to on the side similar to the one on the Anthro website. Seems to be glitchy - search results and quick shops are loading very slowly for me now.

  15. I ordered a pair of ballet flats from Factory over the phone with CS (size exchange) and the pair I received was clearly worn - dirty bottoms with something stuck to one sole and trash in the box. Sigh. I drove 45 minutes to return them since I didn't have a box big enough to ship both back. The store didn't seem too concerned.
